Loans Sharks Caught With Over 200 SASSA Cards

Suspects caught with over 200 SASSA cards were arrested after seen withdrawing money at an ABSA ATM at Thabong Mall in Sebokeng, Gauteng, Wednesday 6 May 2020. It is believed that the suspects are loan sharks who took the owner’s cards as insurance for loans.

Community patrollers from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety saw them at the ATM, withdrawing money from the various SASSA cards, and reported it to the police. The police arrested the suspects with the SASSA cards as well as the money they withdrew. The suspects were held at the Sebokeng police station.

Tswane Metro Police arrested seven people earlier this week, allegedly for SASSA card fraud. They confiscated 91 cards and R191,671 in cash.
The use of Sassa cards as insurance for loans seems to be on the rise.
